Hand Care: The True "Age Tellers" and Targeted Rejuvenation

Why Hands Age First

The hands are subject to three major aging factors:

1.     The Lack of Fat: As we age, we lose the "fat pads" on the back of our hands. This makes the skin look translucent, causing veins, tendons, and bones to appear more prominent.

2.     Solar Exposure: Hands are almost always exposed to UV rays, especially while driving. This leads to Solar Lentigines (sunspots) and the breakdown of elastic fibers.

3.     Chronic Washing: We wash our hands dozens of times a day. Harsh soaps strip away the lipids, leading to "irritant contact dermatitis" and chronic dryness that emphasizes fine lines.

The "Hand Facial" Protocol

To reverse the signs of aging on the hands, you must treat them with the same "multi-layer" approach you use for your face.

Morning: Protection and Prevention. Apply a Vitamin C hand serum. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that neutralizes the free radicals generated by UV light. Follow this with a hand cream that contains at least SPF 30. If you are a frequent driver, consider keeping a bottle of sun-serum in your car's cup holder.

Evening: Correction and Repair. This is the time for Retinol. Using a Retinol body serum on the back of the hands at night is the only way to significantly boost collagen production and fade dark spots. Follow with a rich "occlusive" cream containing ceramides to prevent nighttime dryness.

Weekly: The Brightening Peel. Use a gentle Glycolic Acid peel once a week to remove the dull surface layer and help your treatment serums penetrate deeper.

Pro-Tip: The "Glove Slugging" Method

If your hands are extremely wrinkled or dry, apply your hydrating serum and a thick layer of shea butter cream, then wear 100% cotton gloves to bed. The gloves prevent the product from rubbing off on your sheets and increase the "occlusive" effect, allowing the skin to fully repair itself overnight.
